Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I know if I need counselling?
Only you can decide whether you would like to try counselling, if you are experiencing any of the difficulties on the previous pages then counselling may well be of help.
2. Will my counsellor analyse my problems and give me advice on how to live my life?
Counselling is not about giving advice. The main aim of counselling is to encourage clients to make their own choices and decisions. Client and counsellor will look in detail at the situation or behaviour that is causing concern and together find areas where it is possible to make changes.
3. How long will counselling take?
Counselling could last for only a few sessions or may continue over many months. There will be regular reviews to monitor progress and see if aims are being met.
4. What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Psychotherapists may be concerned with more severe psychological disorders while counsellors have traditionally been more concerned with the problems and difficulties of everyday life but there is often an overlap. According to the BACP both are about overcoming personal difficulties and facilitating change, and the methods used are similar or identical in both counselling and psychotherapy. If there are differences they may relate more to individual training and interest and to the setting where the therapist works.
The most important thing is that the help offered is right for the individual concerned.
6. What do I do if I am feeling better or not finding therapy helpful?
You can finish therapy at any time; hopefully we will have the oppertunity to discuss your decision so it is useful to give one sessions notice.
7.Will I be charged for cancelled sessions?
If you cancel a session within 24hrs, you will need to pay the full rate. Earlier cancellations are not charged for.
8. How much will it cost?
My fee is currently £30.00 per hour.
